JODIE PATTERSON
Day-to-day I work as a lecturer and brand ambassador. But really I’m a Starfish. Let me explain.....
By simple definition, I’m a hardworking, single mom of five (read my bio below). One could imagine that I’m inspired by efficiency, pragmatic thinking and nifty life-hacks. Lots of people assume I focus on to-do lists, and keeping the family on the right path, creating a balanced rhythm at home, and inspiring the kids to be go-getters so they get into college, live successful lives and what not. Sometimes I focus on those things, sure. But mostly, these days, I’m thinking about how to untether. How to break free. How to not be swallowed up by agendas. What inspires me is detaching - from what we’re supposed to do. Ideals, norms, obligations, even people can anchor us down.
I’m fixated on learning how to spread out in this world and become something bigger than just one tiny thing. I want, and I suspect most of us do, to be bigger than a title, a gender, an age, a messy moment (I’ve had a lot of those). I’ve been thinking, and writing about stretching out and traversing multiple worlds, shifting in and out of multiple identities. I like to go off grid and explore random side stories. I now know: the side story is the story. I’ve spent decades reading, traveling, writing, and thinking about big concepts like comparative religion, psychedelics, identity, beatnik culture, faith, and free sex. This may seem all over the place, especially for a middle-aged mother, but the thoroughfare is freedom - what does it look like? How does it taste? And what will it take to grab it?
Call me STARFISH – I stretch out and touch all of life.
PRAISE
“A marvelous book! The Bold World reminds me of the best things we have learned from our uniquely instructive sojourn as black people in America. To be watchful; to pay attention; to make every attempt to comprehend reality; to believe that real life flows in the direction of the real, which is to say, of the true. Not to feel daunted by almost any obstacle for which we have brains and energy to challenge. To rejoice when Life comes through us and has the courage to keep on going.”
